Roughly 50 vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the Germany's town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.
Cars, building surfaces and postal boxes were marked, in some cases with swastikas, they announced in a release.
Officers state they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a resident observed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish substance.
The liquid had been drawn in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Officers then discovered multiple other smeared vehicles and house walls in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation outlawing the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials state early analysis suggest the fluid was most likely human bodily fluid.
"There is still no indication as to its source; investigators are not yet aware of any harm in connection with the occurrence," they added.
City officials said they were attempting "to solve the incident" and have appealed to the community for tips.
A senior official said the attack rendered him stunned and needed to be resolved quickly.
"This event strikes at the core of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the right-wing attack half a decade ago," he posted on online, referring to the killing of nine people by a shooter aiming at people of immigrant origin in five years prior.
