Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The ex-president was convicted of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and given more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he remained under home detention pending court reviews.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" emerged.

This encompassed attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a call for a demonstration that could enable a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears

In a paperwork permitting the detention, the judge said data from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's plan to remove the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the protest called by his offspring.

His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or see it all from your mobile device there on your sofa? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the vigil would be so followers could offer prayers for his health and for the return of democracy in our country."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the possibility of the former president's move to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of organizing to request asylum through a consular facility", a statement said.

The judicial paperwork underscores that the United States embassy in the capital, Brazil's capital, is situated around 13km from Bolsonaro's home.

Worldwide Consequences

The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative US President Trump, leading him to implement a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.

The former president is being detained in a national police facility in Brasilia and will have a custody hearing on the following day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with tracking devices.

They also petitioned that he be permitted to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he required ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.

Background on Conviction

He was convicted of leading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the presidential race to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he knew of a plan which involved plans to kill the current president and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it didn't receive the backing of the military leaders. The current president was took office without problem on the first day of 2023.

But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, many his followers attacked and damaged public facilities in the national capital, Brazil's capital.

The law enforcement intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.

The justices found that the rioters had been incited by him whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, bring back stability and bring him back to power.

At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.

He was also barred from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the 2026 national vote.
