Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year Amid Financial Instability

The United States central bank cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, including the count of new jobs added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of jobs added to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline

Though the bureau was set to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the closure started. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, which he had earlier attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that showed that costs are rising, although gradually. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
