The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
