RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of approach shafts providing entry to the site... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This operation underscores the UK's leading role, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces involved in this strike for their skill and their valour," Healey said. "They were part of thousands of UK service members deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, highlights how our armed forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces conducted what it called a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an ambush killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports Islamic State still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
